As seen in the winning projects this year, which included five award winners in Brighton and Hove. In the commercial category, Hanningtons Lane, a new Lane envisaged as a compliment and extension to Brighton’s famous ‘Lanes’ (submitted by Brighton based architects, Morgan Carn Architects); and Lady Bee Enterprise Centre, Southwick, a flagship project which provides small business units for local companies to rent (submitted by Brighton based contractors Pilbeam Construction and architects, ECE Architecture from Worthing).

In the residential category, there were two winning projects: The Stables, Hove, formerly a Victoria riding stables which has now been converted into apartments and offices (submitted by Hove based River Oaks Homes) and Hove House, a new house with wildlife flower-covered roofs (submitted by Brighton based Baobab Developments).

Finally, in the Public and Community category, Brighton College continued their Sussex Heritage Trust winning streak having won five Awards in previous years. The School of Science and Sport, described by the judges as “a visionary addition to an already impressive suite of buildings, providing state of the art world-leading facilities in ways that constantly surprise and delight”.

There were a further two projects to receive highly commended certificates, two houses: an Arts and Crafts style property in Hove and an early 19th-century town house in Brighton.

Chairman of the Sussex Heritage Trust, Simon Knight, said: “This good news story demonstrates the importance of excellent architecture and design, traditional building skills and craftmanship and arguably without these the heritage we have in Sussex would be all the poorer”.
