Teachers and students at an Eastbourne school have come up with creative ways to help during the coronavirus pandemic - including making 500 face masks for NHS nurses.

Ben Pavey, Katie Fowler and Roger Worrall, members of staff at Willingdon School, initially created a face mask for a parent, who is a nurse, after she said she had no protection. The trio then proceeded to make another 500 masks for the parent’s colleagues.

Headteacher Emily Beer said, “We are so proud of our staff fully representing what we stand for as a school- community is at the heart of all our work. We hope to do more if we can source the materials.”

A school spokesperson added, “If anyone wishes to donate to help fund the school’s costs in creating face visors for frontline health workers, the school has set up a fund specifically for this purpose.

“Any monies raised that remain after the PPE items are no longer needed, will be donated to the NHS.”

Pupils have also taken part in a weekly Lego competition. The winner this week was Year 8 pupil Chloe Malone, who crafted a colourful NHS tribute.

Another pupil, in Year 10, wrote a poem called Weird Time, which advises the public to stay at home, as part of the school’s Getting Creative Competition.

Weird Time

Weird time

It’s a weird time to be alive

When you can’t go outside

And live your normal life

But stay inside

Otherwise this weird time

Could become life

It’s a weird time for the NHS

Working round the clock

And trying their best

So stay inside

And protect their lives

It’s a weird time for the children who don’t understand

Confused on why their house is on lockdown

It will all be different when this over

Just stay inside

We will get through this together.

It’s a weird time for teachers and the students who study

Working at home will always be a worry

But the support is endless, no matter what the topic

So stay inside

And let your mind become focused

As a nation we are strong

We stand together when anything is wrong

Let’s all come together

And stay at home

To end this problem

And escape this

Weird time
