The castle, which dates back to the 11th century, will remain closed over the winter months while undergoing essential annual maintenance and restoration works that preserve the millennium of history within its walls for future generations.

Castle manager Stephen Manion said: “Despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, we have still enjoyed a wonderful open season.

“We have been so grateful to all our visitors who have supported us and come to enjoy the Castle and gardens during this time. Our work would not be possible without you all.

“Autumn is a truly special time to visit our grounds with an amazing variety of plants and flowers to discover, as well as our new Water Gardens with opportunities to spot ducks, swans, coots and more!

“Before we close, we would also like to thank our brilliant staff, from our friendly guides to our dedicated gardens team, for their commitment to keeping our visitors safe and making history enjoyable for all.”

In October, the breath-taking gardens offer an experience just as magical as in the summer months, with tropical borders bursting with exotic plants in crimson, orange and gold. Pretty herbaceous salvias are flowering, with delicate blooms of white sometimes tipped with blue or pink.

In the organic kitchen garden, brassicas and herbs are thriving, while apples and pears are being harvested.

Visitors can beat the changeable autumn weather by exploring the rich history of the Castle interior.

The Regency Library, resplendent in red velvet and deep mahogany, is one highlight currently open to visitors.

The grand Barons’ Hall, a view of the Grand Staircase and the Dining Room and Drawing Room are all also open.
