A section of footway will be built on the verge in Capel Lane, which is near both shops and Gossops Green Primary School. Work is scheduled to start on 29 March and will take about three weeks, subject to factors such as severe weather.

A West Sussex Highways spokesperson said: “This project will improve pedestrian access for the whole community, including the school.

“The opportunity arose for some of this work to be done over the Easter school holiday, when there should be reduced traffic.”

And local residents have welcomed the news. On the Gossops Green Residents Facebook page, Barbora Parr said: "I will hugely appreciate it. It is busy with parents and children after school, cars going through Capel Lane in both directions but road is only wide for a one car. It gets busy and dangerous.

"Having a path by the school fence will give me a piece of mind that my children won't get run over."

Vicky Tilling said: "This will be very welcome - the path on that road is currently way too narrow."

Sally Gilgeours said: "The amount of speeding, traffic and accidents along that road, well this will be a massive improvement and safer for school kids on their school run."

Dave Mark Chungus posted his thoughts as well. He said: "I would love to see more pedestrian crossings along Gossops drive and also speed bumps in the section from Medway up to buck woods drive roundabout. Capel lane should be converted to a paved pedestrian footway banning all cars. Ideally the area behind the shops towards the green by the GG primary should be accessible to pedestrians only. I will risk to say the same should apply to Kidborough Road. No cars at all."

The intention is for Capel Lane to be kept open but traffic will be dissuaded from parking on-street for the length from the school access northwards towards Paddockhurst Road."

The school will encourage pupil pick-up and drop-off away from this area, and the contractor will work furthest away from the school gate until the school breaks for Easter.

The project is estimated to cost approximately £23,000.
