His daughter, Cathy Khan, said: “He trained as a paramedic and was stationed at Heathfield, where he was solely responsible for Heathfield and the surrounding area.

“He rose to Station Officer until he was promoted to Superintendent at Eastbourne Ambulance Station. During his time there he was responsible for co- ordinating major incidents including the Brighton bombing at the Grand Hotel in 1984. After retiring early he became a coach driver, working for Davies of Rye then a pall-bearer for Waterhouses Funeral Directors in Burwash.

“After moving to Bexhill he became a loyal member of the General Committee for the League of Friends of the Bexhill Hospital. He was very instrumental in arranging their yearly garden party and fundraising efforts.

“Dad was a real people person and he centred his life around them. He saved many lives, delivered babies in ambulances and supported people in their time of crisis.

“He served the NHS with a passion and a dedication and he spent the last few days of his life being cared for by people who had the same selfless, sacrificial commitment to save lives as he did.

“Sadly he contracted Covid-19 shortly after the lockdown and with his underlying health issues was admitted to hospital after collapsing at home.

“My sisters and I would like to thank Lifeline, the ambulance service and the staff at the Conquest who all treated him with the utmost kindness and care as he bravely fought the virus.”

A service celebrating Mr Mayne’s life is planned for a future date. Anyone wanting details can email Cathy at [email protected].
