VE Day 75: Tree planted and choir to perform virtually in Midhurst whilst The Last Post will be live streamed in Petworth

Alternative ways of commemorating the 75th anniversary of VE Day have been organised in Midhurst and Petworth.

To mark 75 years since Victory in Europe, a Persian ironwood tree has been planted at Holmbush Way, next to the fire station.

It was arranged by Midhurst Town Council after its event was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

A spokesperson said: “An official plaque will be arranged later in the year with a small ceremony. We hope everyone has a wonderful VE Day picnic at home with family.”

Midhurst Community Choir, which was meant to be singing as part of the celebrations in Market Square, will still be bringing the entertainment to residents’ homes.

Its post on social media read: “Have no fear, your community choir are creative and will always find a way to bring you music! .

“Please tune into our Facebook page between 4pm and 6pm [on Friday, May 8] where we will be uploading a few musical offerings from choir members, including a video from a local special guest.”

Meanwhile, The Last Post will be live streamed on Facebook from the War Memorial in Petworth to residents at 11am on Friday. It will also be streamed from Rosemary Gardens at 3pm.

Petworth Town Council wrote: “Thanks goes to Nathan Fynes of the Petworth Town Band.

“Please do not come out and watch, enjoy the live stream instead from the comfort of your home.”
