Virtual event for carers in Eastbourne

A virtual coffee morning will be held next week for Carers Rights Day.

The mayor of Eastbourne councillor Steve Wallis and councillor Peter Diplock are holding the Care for a Coffee event from 10am on November 26.

The event is being held to promote the rights of carers and will also feature representatives from Association of Carers, Care for the Carers and Carers UK.

The councillors are encouraging people to join them online to learn about what support is on offer for carers and to share useful information.

Cllr Wallis said, “We all know someone who is a carer. There are millions of carers across the UK, many of whom are unpaid, and we thank them for their work and the often-silent burden they carry.

“It’s important that all carers understand their rights and are able to access the support that is available so we hope as many people as possible will join us for Care for a Coffee to find out more within a relaxed atmosphere while enjoying a cuppa.”

Cllr Diplock is submitting a motion on carers’ rights at Eastbourne Borough Council’s Full Council meeting on November 18.

He said, “This motion is a powerful symbol of the esteem in which we hold carers and their invaluable work. Within it we have pledged, as a council, to lead by example in helping staff who are carers to balance their caring responsibilities within work, and continuing to offer advice wherever we can.

“We also support efforts to extend to carers the employment rights within the Equality Act 2010 and call upon our MP to back the efforts made by Parliamentarians in line with this.”
