Watch Northern Lights-style phenomenon light up East Sussex sky

In an effect reminiscent of the Northern Lights, iridescent streams of light can be seen ebbing and flowing in the purple starry sky above the downs near Eastbourne.

The remarkable time lapse video, made by Max Thompson, shows the waves begin as small bright flashes before building into a spectacular rainbow-coloured phenomenon.

It could be an aurora, which is a natural light display in the sky caused by solar winds.

The most famous kind of aurora is the aurora borealis, or Northern Lights, which are often seen in high latitude regions around the Arctic.
