Worthing animal rescue charity urges people to Walk for Wadars – at home

Animal-rescue charity Wadars is calling on people to help replace vital income that is being lost due to the coronavirus outbreak by taking part in a virtual sponsored walk in the safety of their own homes.

Operations manager, Tracy Cadman, said: “Walk for Wadars is our annual five-mile sponsored walk which takes place every May, but clearly this year holding it in its usual format isn’t an option. Having to cancel the walk means that we are losing well over £5,000 from this one event alone, and we are also losing funds on a weekly basis from a range of other activities, as well as the adoption fees that we receive when we home animals.”

Wadars closed to the public several weeks ago and also had to put its animal fostering and adoption schemes on hold.

But staff are on site every day to look after animals in the charity’s care and the team of animal rescue officers are still responding to calls about sick and injured wildlife – which are increasing each week.

Tracy added: “With the extension to the lockdown, ‘Stay Home & Walk for Wadars’ is not only a way to raise much needed funds to help keep our services running, it is also a great way to turn the frustration of having to stay home into something really positive.”

Participants can either decide to walk the whole five-miles or choose a distance that suits them, and can either walk alone or make it a challenge to complete with other members of their household. The charity is asking people to donate £10 per person or whatever they can afford or set up their own Just Giving page and raise sponsorship for Wadars through their efforts.

Other ways that people can support Wadars at this time include donating via its website or by sending a cheque, made payable to Wadars, to the Wadars rehoming centre in Hangleton Lane, Ferring, BN12 6PP; getting crafty and making bunting which will be used at events once the lockdown is over and donating items from the charity’s Amazon Wish List.

Wadars has been rehoming domestic animals for over 50 years and last year its wildlife rescue and rehabilitation service dealt with 1,300 casualties.
