Perfect smiles for Littlehampton's youngsters

SCHOOLCHILDREN have been having fun and looking after their smiles.

Elm Grove Infant School, Wickbourne Infant School, and Flora McDonald Junior School, in Littlehampton, and Georgian Gardens Community Primary School, in Rustington, took part in a West Sussex-wide two-minute "Brushathon", where they learnt the best way to keep their pearly whites gleaming.

Head teacher at Elm Grove, Thirza Jago said that children were taught oral hygiene as part of a healthy schools project, and that the event, organised by the West Sussex Primary Care Trust (PCT), was a great way to enhance that.

"You can go on and on about how important it is, but if you can just make it a bit for fun for them, you can make it stick.

"We showed them pictures of black and missing teeth, and they all groaned, but we told them that is what happens if you don't look after your teeth."

Each pupil at the school was also given a new toothbrush, after PCT figures showed that one in five people cannot remember when they last changed theirs.

Thelma Edwards, oral health promotion co-ordinator for the PCT, said: "It is so important that children learn good oral health habits that they can continue through their lives."

She added that anyone who was not registered with a dentist should call 0300 100 899 to find their nearest practice taking on new patients.
