Petition against sale of car park

RESIDENTS have launched a petition to save a free car park from sale to Worthing’s planned new academy.

A decision on whether to dispose of the Queen Street car park was deferred by councillors at the Joint Strategic Committee on Tuesday night.

Council officers had recommended the car park be sold, as it has been identified as a potential drop off and collection point for the building of a new 900-pupil secondary school at Northbrook College.

But following representations from residents, the committee deferred their decision, as no offers for the car park have been officially made at present.

Worthing Borough Council leader Paul Yallop said: “We were asked by the previous school trust if the car park could be used and I said we had to go through the processes and the public needed to be involved.

“It has not formally been asked for by the new trust but the suggestion is we might be approached in the near future.”
