Petition calls on council to ‘save the Shelley Fountain’

Shelley Fountain is a ‘world class’ sculpture that should not be scrapped, a Horsham woman has said.

A question mark has hovered over the future of the controversial town centre landmark for a number of years, with rising maintenance costs and reliability issues among the concerns.

However, Susannah Brady, 43, has set up an online campaign including a petition to ‘Save the Shelley Fountain’.

She said: “I think we are so lucky to have a sculpture of world class quality. People don’t know how privileged we are to have this.

“It is a crying shame it has been left to wrack and ruin, but I think when there is a will (to keep it) there is a way.

“It brings such pleasure and joy to so many people, and children engage with it so fantastically.”

Susannah, who is majoring in Art History at the Open University, claimed her campaign has the backing of fountain sculptor Angela Connor.

Susannah has initiated the campaign on her own in a bid to generate support.

She added: “I am not an expert, but what I do say is art is subjective and what one person hates, one person loves.”

The petition is approaching 100 signatures, while more than 300 people have liked the Facebook page ‘Save the Shelley Fountain’.

The future of the sculpture, installed in 1996, has been under threat and hotly debated in the town for years.

Last month, the County Times reported that Horsham District Council is considering scrapping the fountain, although ‘no decisions’ have been made on its future.
