Petition for a safe crossing on the A272
A petition has been presented on behalf of residents in Chailey and Newick asking for a safe crossing solution on the busy A272.
The problem was highlighted last year when a student from Chailey School was in a collision with a car as she crossed the road to catch a bus. The county council has found the funds for warning signs in the area, but residents want a safe crossing and traffic calming.
Villagers say the main problem is a 50 mph stretch, sandwiched between a 30 mph zone at the King’s Head and a 40 mph zone approaching Newick. They fear more accidents as pressure for housing increases, generating more cars on the A272.
The petition with 288 names was handed in to East Sussex County Council by councillor Sharon Davy, who represents Chailey and Wivelsfield, and by councillor Jim Sheppard, who represents Newick.
