Petition sparked by 55 homes scheme in Peacehaven

A proposed development of 55 homes in Peacehaven is proving controversial with residents who have signed a petition against the scheme.

Bovis Homes wants to build the houses on land at Arundel Road and has applied to Lewes District Council for planning permission.

But residents say the development will have a detrimental impact on those living in Arundel Road and Gladys Avenue.

In the petition it says: “There is also a concern about the medical services provided by the Meridian Centre Surgery.

“The surgery medical staff are always busy and it is difficult to imagine how they will cope with the increase in patients.

“Many people in this area moved/retired to Peacehaven to escape the humdrum of urban life but it now appears that this is being forced upon them.

“The beauty and peaceful views of the South Downs will now be obliterated before their eyes and the reasons for moving to Peacehaven have been taken away.”

More than 70 residents have signed the petition, which outlines concerns about the scheme.

The petition said the roads surrounding the area were narrow and congested with parked cars, adding Arundel Road was used as an alternative to the main South Coast Road and was particularly busy in rush hour. They also felt they had been given very little notice.

Bovis Homes’ regional senior planning manager, Hamish Buttle said: “We believe the homes we are proposing to build will be sustainable, fit in with the surroundings and will quickly become an attractive new part of Peacehaven, offering a great opportunity for local homebuyers to get on or move up the property ladder.

“The land was originally earmarked for a secondary school, which is now not required, and the principle for residential development there is accepted.

“There have been no objections from Highways to traffic impact and there will be ample parking, including visitor spaces, as part of the development.

“Residents have been given the appropriate 21-day consultation period to make comment under the planning application process and we would work closely with them to minimise any disruption during the construction period.

“The proposals would also see significant funds put into local infrastructure with more than £500,000 of financial contributions proposed for educational, highway and recreational improvements.”
