Pett Parish Council: More than 50 people crammed themselves into the Catharine Holman Room at Pett Village hall on Tuesday October 21. It was the meeting of Pett Parish Council and the main item of discussion was the proposed new pavilion at the Recreation Ground. The decision facing the Council was whether to make an application to the Public Loans Board for a loan of some £30,000. The money was part of a total sum of £135,000 needed to build a new pavilion. Some £70,00 had already been pledged by Sport England, Rother District Council, Pett Parish Council and Pett Cricket Club. A grant was also being sought from BIFFA. Some of those present raised a number of concerns, which included Why was there a shortfall? Did the scheme have to be so expensive? Could the pavilion not simply be refurbished? How much fund raising had been done? How would it benefit the whole community when only a small number of people used it? Would the new building be competition for Pett Village Hall? How would maintenance and cleaning be covered? How much VAT would be payable? There was also a number of people who spoke in support of the proposal, saying that the facilities needed to be brought up to date and include such things as disabled access, as well as changing rooms for both sexes; the Cricket Club was thriving and the junior branch Pett Piranhas was growing; sport was a way to engage young people; and when you looked at the number of people who used the Recreation Ground in the summer, it was well over a thousand. At the end of public time, the council meeting reconvened and after some discussion, the council voted 3 to 2 in favour of the proposal to take out a loan, with 2 abstentions.

In the last months of the war, with the Third Reich teetering on the brink of collapse, the German army are ordered to destroy every piece of looted art in their possession. In a race against time, American President Franklin D. Roosevelt mobilises a seven-man platoon comprising museum directors and art historians to rescue the cream of the world’s artistic and cultural treasures from the hands of the enemy, and return them to their rightful owners. But with no previous experience of weapons and tactics, the hastily assembled group soon face a rude awakening when they experience their first live action behind enemy lines. As well as Clooney, the all-star cast includes Matt Damon, Cate Blanchett, Bill Murray, John Goodman and Jean Dujardin. And for those of you who are unaware, parts of this film were shot in Camber, which gives it a local connection! Please note that this is a different film to the one in Pett and Pett Level Parish News. The film starts at 7:30pm with refreshments served from 7pm.
