Pett WI: August traditionally sees Pett WI members go out to tea and this year was no exception. Following on from a fascinating talk by Lucy Bowyer from Rye Harbour Nature Reserve in June, members decided to see the Reserve for themselves on August 15. Following a brief visit to Kiln Cottage, the Visitor Centre, the members went to the large bird hide near the reclaimed salt marsh. There they could see the sea rushing in through a culvert under the road. The tide was particularly high that day. There were also a variety of birds to be seen such as Golden Plovers and Black-tailed Godwits as well as Herring Gulls. Afterwards members enjoyed a wonderful tea at the Avocet Gallery and decided that next year’s event would have an extremely hard act to follow! Today (Friday August 29) at 2pm at Pett Church, the funeral of Arthur Hollman will take place and afterwards at Pett Village Hall. Arthur was a well-known cardiologist, medicinal plantsman and cardiac historian as well as a popular village resident. He and his late wife Catharine were instrumental in the fund-raising and building of Pett Village Hall. He will be much missed.

Church Services: on Sunday August 31 – Benefice Communion, St Mary & St Peter, Pett at 10:30am led by Richard Barron; Sunday Service at the Methodist Chapel at 10:45am.

Village Choir: On Monday September 1 the Village Choir will meet again at 7:30pm in Pett Methodist Chapel.

Pett Older People’s Project: POPP on Tuesday September 2 will feature Games and Room 101 (like the TV show!). Sheryl Tucker, the Nail Technician will also be there. The session runs from 10:30am to 2:30pm and will include a two-course lunch for just £5.

Village Coffee Morning: On Wednesday September 3 Sally and her team will be ready to welcome you with excellent coffee and a great selection of cakes at the Village Coffee Morning. Everyone is welcome from 10am at Pett Village Hall.

Mobile Library: Also on September 3 the Mobile Library will be in Pett and Pett Level. It will start at the Church at 10.10am, moving on to Chick Hill at 10:50am and finishing at The Smuggler at 11.20am.

Flicks in the Village: After a month’s break Flicks in the Village will be returning on Thursday September 4 with The Railway Man (15). Colin Firth, Nicole Kidman and Stellan Skarsgård star in this war drama adapted from Eric Lomax’s memoirs about his experiences in a POW camp. While serving in the Second World War, British Army officer Eric Lomax (Jeremy Irvine) is captured and held prisoner by the Japanese. He is brutally tortured and forced, along with his fellow captives, to build the Thai-Burma Railway. Many years later an older Lomax (Firth) is still traumatised by the experience. Supported by his wife Patti (Kidman) and friend Finlay (Skarsgård), he decides to track down one of his torturers, Takashi Nagase (Hiroyuki Sanada), hoping to find the answers that will enable him to finally let go of the hatred he has held for so long. Please do not forget, all are welcome to join the Society and enjoy an evening watching a film for as little as £4.00 per show with like-minded people in the local environment of Pett Village Hall.
