This meeting was followed by the Annual Parish Assembly. Andrew Dunlop, Chairman, gave his report and said that although the precept had increased by 2% last year, as well as making grants to Pett Flower Show, Pett Older People’s Project (POPP) and Pett Village Hall, including the successful Coronation Lunch, Councillors had strived to give the village value for money. They had undertaken taken tasks such as hedge cutting, which had led to savings of £1m per annum.

The two agenda items were Community Speedwatch and the future of Pett Post Office. The former was generally welcomed although concern was expressed that it could lead unneighbourliness and to progress it further, a co-ordinator would be needed.

With regard to the Post Office, the current post-master had declined to attend the meeting but after much discussion, it was agreed that an approach would be made to see if the village/ Parish Council could rent the ground floor of the building, which currently houses the Post Office.

Several items were raised in Public Time and these included: parking on verges, mains drainage, Pett Village Hall (the Main Hall will be out of action for two weeks from June 9 whilst repair work is carried out) and the tennis court.

At the Village Hall Quiz held on Saturday March 22, around £250 was raised for hall funds.

Church Services on Sunday March 30 – Mothering Sunday – Holy Communion – Kay Burnett, Meriel Deasy and the Methodist Worship Leaders, St Mary & St Peter, Pett at 10:30am.

On Monday March 31 in Pett Methodist Chapel, the Village Choir will meet at 7:30pm.

POPP on Tuesday April 1 will feature John Tibble – Guitar and Song. The session runs from 10:30am to 2:30pm and will include a two-course lunch for just £5.

What tempting treat will be on offer at the April Coffee Morning? To say nothing of the famous sausage rolls made by our dear butcher Phil! Why not come along and find out on Wednesday April 2? New faces are always welcome and the session lasts from 10am to 12 noon.

Also on Wednesday April 2 the Mobile Library will be in Pett and Pett Level. It will start at the Church at 10.10am, moving on to Chick Hill at 10:50am and finishing at The Smuggler at 11.20am.

On Thursday April 3 Flicks in the Village will be showing Philomena (12).

Falling pregnant as a teenager in Ireland in 1952, Philomena (Judi Dench) was sent to the convent of Roscrea to be looked after as a “fallen woman”. When her baby was only a toddler, he was taken away by the nuns for adoption in America. Philomena spent the next fifty years searching for him but with no success. Together they set off to America on a journey that would not only reveal the extraordinary story of Philomena’s son, but also create an unexpectedly close bond between Philomena and Martin. The film is a compelling narrative of human love and loss that ultimately celebrates life, showing that there is laughter even in the darkest places.

The film starts at 7:30pm with refreshments served from 7pm. Membership forms are available on the night or you can always pop into the Butchers shop in Pett and grab an application form.
