Well, what a week it was for Open Gardens in Pett! First on Thursday June 20 the POPP Open Gardens featured 8 different gardens throughout Pett. There was a good turnout of visitors – many from outside the village – and the weather, though breezy, was not too bad. More than £800 was raised for the Pett Older People’s Project and at the end the organisers were tired but satisfied. They were also extremely grateful for the generosity of Pett residents who supplied delicious home made cakes!

And then the open garden event at Fairlight End on June 21 and 22 raised £,3482 for charity. This is an increase of £900 over 2012. The National Gardens Scheme charities including Macmillan Cancer Support and Marie Curie Cancer Care will receive £2786 and Pett Village Hall will receive £696. Visitors came from as far away as Holland and Sweden, as well as from Suffolk, Surrey and London. The event is a huge amount of work, and Chris and Robin Hutt wish to thank their brilliant friends and neighbours in Pett village, dozens of whom actively supported the event, for helping to achieve such a positive result.

Church Service on Sunday June 30 – Benefice Communion, St Andrew’s, Fairlight, at 10:30am; Sunday Service at the Methodist Chapel at 10:45am.

POPP on Tuesday July 2 will feature Keith Osborne and Music for Health. The session runs from 10:30am to 2:30pm and will include a two-course lunch for just £5.

On Wednesday July 3 Sally and her team will be ready to welcome you with excellent coffee and a great selection of cakes at the Village Coffee Morning. Everyone is welcome from 10am.

On Thursday July 4 Flicks in the Village will be showing Quartet. Directed by Oscar-winning actor Dustin Hoffman and set at one of England’s most scenic estates, the fictional Beecham House for Retired Musicians, Quartet centres on four opera singers. Cecily (Pauline Collins), Wilfred (Billy Connolly), and Reginald (Tom Courtenay) are busy preparing for the annual Verdi Gala, when word spreads about a famous new resident. After Reggie catches sight of the elegant figure, his excitement about the benefit gives way to sorrow: it’s his ex-wife, Jean (Downton Abbey’s Maggie Smith). If the amusingly acid-tongued Jean appears to have moved on--she’s married twice since--Reggie hasn’t, and still blames her for the failure of their brief marriage. Under the directorship of the supremely self-satisfied Cedric (Michael Gambon), the entire facility continues to rehearse for the concert, except Jean, who says she’s retired from singing, though her former partners long to perform their acclaimed version of Verdi’s Rigoletto. As they concentrate on persuading her to reconsider, the ice between Reggie and Jean starts to thaw just as Cissy’s memory starts to fade, but priorities shift as old friends become reacquainted.

As the Flicks team thinks that this will be a popular film, there will be a matinee performance at 2.30pm at Pett Village Hall with the doors opening at 2pm. Then, as usual there will be another showing in the evening at 7.30pm with refreshments served from 7pm. Membership forms are available on the night or you can always pop into the Butchers shop in Pett and grab an application form.
