The Parish Council meeting held on August 21 was attended by PC Paul Fielder from Sussex Police and Gary Potter from East Sussex County Council.

PC Fielder gave the Council a Priorities Report and said that there had been no burglaries in Pett since May 21 and no incidents of anti-social behavior and vandalism from the same date. People experiencing anti-social behavior should call 077876 85725, where a dedicated team of officers is on hand to deal with such cases.

PC Fielder also told the Council that 10 speeding checks had been carried out in Pett and Pett Level since April this year. He added that the new PCSO for our area was Richard Birchard. Richard is a retired police constable who has worked at Horsham, Gatwick, Rye, Beckley, Peasmarsh and Iden. He has been in firearms, VIP and Royal Protection, as well as time as a rural beat officer. Pett residents will have an opportunity to meet Richard when he holds a surgery in Pett Post Office on October 26. More details nearer the time.

In answer to a question from a member of the public on the issue of parking on pavements, PC Fielder said that whilst such acts were not a criminal offence, Rother District was the one district in the Sussex Police area that had the discretion to make the owners of such vehicles move them, on the basis that they were causing an obstruction.

Gary Potter was a technical Assistant from East Sussex County Council and alerted the Council to the closure of the road from Ore, through Fairlight to Winchelsea Beach that will take place from September 10 for 5 nights from 7pm to 6am each night. Further details are in Pett Parish News.

The issue of overgrown hedges, which obscure drivers’ view of the road, particularly near the bottom of Chick Hill, was raised by the Council Chairman with both Mr Potter and with Cllr Carl Maynard (ESCC). Whilst Mr Potter said he would take this back to his department, Cllr Maynard asked for a formal request for action to be made by the Parish Clerk.

Can you believe it? Flicks in the Village will be 10 years old on September 6! Over the last decade this film club has shown a variety of films – comedy, drama, tear jerkers and blockbusters, all on the first Thursday of the month, in rain, sun, frost and snow

To celebrate this momentous event there will be two screenings (2.30pm and 7.30pm) of the film The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (12). Not only that, there is a glass of bubbly for those coming to the evening performance! The film itself is the story of a group of British retirees who travel to India to take up residence in what they believe is a newly restored hotel. Less luxurious than its advertisements, they are forever transformed by their shared experiences, discovering that life and love can begin again when you begin to let go of the past. From the director of Shakespeare in Love and featuring an all-star British cast, including Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy, Penelope Wilton and Tom Wilkinson, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is a charming, life- affirming comedy drama about life, love and new beginnings…

The film starts at 7:30pm with refreshments served from 7pm. Membership forms are available on the night or you can always pop into the Butchers shop in Pett and grab an application form and join this village institution!
