Petworth charity chosen for donation

The specialist organisation, which works with older people in Petworth and further afield, was chosen by retirement housebuilder McCarthy and Stone following an appeal in December for charities to come forward for donations.

The company, which operates the Morgan Court development in Station Road, was inundated with requests from neighbourhood projects and charities in the area.

Julie Ward, sales and marketing director, said: “The work that Petworth and District Over 60s Day Centre does is invaluable in the local area and it gives us great pleasure to be able to support them in this small, yet significant, way.

“As a company, we appreciate that our commitment is not only to build quality homes for retirees but also to help create a positive legacy in the communities in which we operate, and supporting local charities is just one way we endeavour to do this.”

The charity offers a friendship centre with various activities and the £500 donation will go towards upgrading the building to make it warmer and more accessible.

Caroline Stoneman, house committee chairman, said: “We offer a multitude of services for the over 60s in Petworth and the surrounding villages, such as Graffham, Northchapel, Tillington and Upwaltham.

“Anyone is welcome to come in and have a cup of tea or coffee, have a chat and join in the various activities on offer. We also have an outing every August and Christmas tea in Petworth house, as well access to a local minibus, helping those who need it pop into town to do their shopping.

“Our aim is to make the centre as environmentally sustainable as possible and make it a warm and friendly place for people to visit.”
