In a statement to the town council she said the clerk had ‘insinuated I have engaged in improper financial transaction with the previous clerk’.

She told fellow councillors she had asked for an explanation for the allegations which she deemed ‘defamatory’ but there had been no proper response.

“I must ask for a full written explanation and in the absence of her being able to substantiate her comments, a full retraction of these allegations and an apology.”

After the meeting Mr Kemp said: “I am very sad this has come up again. It is ancient history which I hoped we had drawn a line under.

“I shall be speaking to both Juliet and the clerk in the hope of finally putting this to rest once and for all.”
