Picture perfect as visiting artist unveils portrait in Bognor

The Bognor Regis Art Society had a very different visiting artist when Anthea de La Roche arrived to demonstrate her skills as a portrait painter.

She completed her training at Maidenhead Art College a number of years ago and finished with a diploma in Fine Art.

She is related by her grandmother to the French artist Paul de La Roche.

For the first hour of her demonstration, she described her techniques of pastel portraiture; how she approaches her subject with a draughtmanship commitment with horizontal and vertical lines.

She always starts from the inside and works outwards, finishing with the shape of the face and always re-assessing as she paints to make sure relationships of features connect with each other.

Her sitter was a member of the art society who sat very closely and at the same level.

All conversation stopped as Anthea progressed with her portrait.

In deep concentration she connected herself with the sitter and finally completed her artwork to a hushed audience in just one hour.

Lots of questions were asked by members who are very keen to progress their skills into portraiture.
