Picture perfect shots prove popular in Littlehampton

Photographer Roy White has filled the Church Street-based museum’s Community Gallery with a range of vibrant photographs captured on his trails across the county.

His exhibition launched at the end of last month and is entitled Miscellaneous Thoughts.

It features dozens of images, from tranquil countryside settings, brimming with life and colour, to dramatic architecture and animals in action.

Juliet Thomas, curator at the museum, said: “We wanted to inject autumn with a bit of colour, freshness and vibrancy.

“And it’s been a really popular display. We’ve had lots of lovely comments, particularly about the freshness of the photos.”

Roy is a self-taught photographer, who has been enjoying the pastime as his hobby since his father brought him his first Kodak Brownie. Always learning, he believes photography is a difficult skill to master, though he feels the process has, in many ways, become easier since digital cameras were introduced.

Quickly putting paid to the popular opinion that ‘the better your equipment, the better your image’, Roy said that the most important thing is the person behind the camera having the eye for a great picture.

One of Roy’s images shows just that, capturing the moment a swan begins to beat its wings, lifting up and out of a small pond.

Other dynamic pictures include one of a golden retriever bounding towards the camera and a bird, with its feathers ruffled, perched upon a branch.

Councillor Malcolm Belchamber, chairman of Littlehampton Town Council’s community resources committee, said: “Roy’s style is simple yet very effective.”

There will be further treats in store for photography lovers next month when the Littlehampton and District Camera Club hosts its own display at the museum.

It will open at the Hearne Gallery on November 15.

To mark it, the club will be holding two photography workshops, on November 22 and December 6.
