Dressed in post-box red and waving giant letters and postcards, protesters took to the streets of Lewes on Saturday (March 5) to campaign against the closure of the town’s Post Office.
The peaceful protest started at the Post Office, on High Street, at 11am and made its way down to Cliffe High Street, where the group gathered signatures on a petition to stop the franchising of Lewes’ Crown Post Office branch.
More than 2,840 people have now signed the petition, which can found be found online at https://you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/stop-the-franchising-of-lewes-post-office.
A campaign to stop the Post Office closing was launched almost immediately after it was revealed Post Office Ltd planned to franchise services for 39 branches, including Lewes.
Post Office Ltd said the 39 branches would be rehomed after it finds a suitable retail partner to work with.
Residents fear the franchising of such a busy branch would ‘lead to longer queues, less services offered, and an all round inferior service, which will affect businesses and individuals’.
