PICTURES: Sompting Festival

THIS year's Sompting Festival has been hailed a success by organisers after visitors flocked to the weekend-long event.

Worthing West MP Peter Bottomley opened proceedings on Saturday, May 31, accompanied by Tim Pullan and organising committee member Mike Tristram, who is also a trustee of the Sompting Estate.

Attractions including live music and dance performances, a fun fair and a beer festival, with events taking place on Sompting Recreation Ground, in West Street, and at the village hall.

Festival chairman Tim Clarke said: "We had a great weekend.

"The village hall had displays from its users and laid on refreshments, and on the recreation ground there the beer festival, which extended over the whole weekend, plus the bungee jumping on the Friday, which raised quite a lot for the participants' charities."

Dance performances were laid on by the KC Street Dancers, Southcoast Zodiacs, and Egyptian belly-dancers.

Music was provided by the 80-strong Cantatrice Ladies' Choir, indie-rock band Coast, all-female group Amethyst, rock 'n' roll bands Neon and Just By Chance, and bluegrass by the Southdown Ramblers.

There were also performances by the TSS Intrepid marching band, the Boundstone orchestra and Lancing Brass.

The Messengers UK, a junior gospel choir, also performed at the festival. Tim said: "They have only been going since January, but they put on an extremely professional and lively performance to officially close this year's festival.

"We also had the first ever public screening of our guest star Bowvayne's video of his single Hot for You '“ which just happened to have been released on iTunes the same day!

"The weather was very kind and a great time was had by all."
