The theme Am I Being Unfair to You? was explored on Friday for this year's Women's World Day of Prayer.

The service was written by the Christian women of the Philippines and translated into 1,00 different languages to be used throughout the world, starting at sunrise over the island of Samoa and continuing until sunset off the coast of America Samoa.

The day of prayer was for everyone, not just for women, and services in the area included gatherings at St Peter’s RC Church in Shoreham and St Michael and All Angels Church in Southwick.

Jill Austin, committee member for Shoreham of Women’s World Day of Prayer, said: “The committee is very grateful to the Catholic Church for their organisation and hospitality on the day.

“It is quite remarkable that this service starts on those far off lands as day breaks and continues around the world.”

The service was based on women seeking economic justice, with stories recounting hopes and fears.

Graham Ricketts, the parish priest, welcomed everyone to St Peter’s, then the Rev Barbara Wilson, deacon in the parish of Kingston Buci and secretary of the Shoreham committee, gave her welcome and some notices, having co-ordinated the event for Shoreham.

Diana Ralston from St Peter’s, led the service, with other parts shared between representatives of the Shoreham churches.

St Peter’s congregation was joined by members from Shoreham Baptist Church, St Mary’s, St Francis, St Nicolas, St Julian’s and St Giles’, Church of the Good Shepherd on Shoreham Beach, and Shoreham Methodist Church.

A singing group was formed by members of the different churches involved, with music accompaniment arranged by St Peter’s.
