PICTURES: Worthing summer show

Gardeners had to contend with searing heat in the build up to the show but managed to protect the best of their blooms for a stunning display at Offington Park Methodist Church, South Farm Road, Worthing, on Saturday.

As well as the colourful displays of sweet peas and roses, there were fruit, vegetables, flower arranging, cookery and children’s classes, together with sales tables and refreshments with homemade cakes.

Anne Locke, press officer, said: “The high standard of all the entries made it a very colourful show for the large number of visitors.

“The vases of mixed flowers in the annuals/biennials and the perennials were spectacular, as were the vases of flowering and foliage shrubs.

“There were also many wonderful flower arrangements.”

The main flower judge will be Jean Griffin from BBC Sussex’s Sunday morning gardening programme Dig It

Prize winners were:

Ted Banks – the highest amount of prize money in show, the most prize money in the sweet pea classes and the best exhibit of sweet peas.

Mrs Reeve – the best exhibit in show for her vase of six stems of buddleia.

Maureen Jackson – best exhibit of a gold rose and the most prize money in the Christine Shane, the best vase of roses.

Janice Shambrook – best hanging basket, best pot plant and most prize money in the fruit and vegetable classes.

Linda Charman – best exhibit in classes 20-25 for her vase of annuals/biennials.

Kathy Lester – best exhibit in the flower arranging classes.

Sue Richardson – judge’s choice in the flower arranging classes and the most points in the cookery classes.
