SUMMER IS GONE: And so is freedom. How fortunate we have been this year to have had an extended summer. I always feel sad when it is over as, perhaps like many others, I loathe cold weather, especially when it also comprises wind and wet. Keats may have enjoyed the '˜season of mists and mellow fruitfulness' but it is what follows that seems to be interminable. Also the darkness is another restriction, if like me, an eye condition precludes driving at night. This restricts any social events and night classes are no longer a possibility. One is dependent upon the kindness of others to attend anything when daylight ends.

CATS: I was horrified to hear that an American professor was suggesting the annihilation of cats because they catch birds when they are left to roam free. It is possible, of course, to build them a natural enclosure to explore and play in, if you have the space and resources to do so. Living by the frenetic C7 road where so many cats have been run over, I used to walk my Birman cats on harness and lead. This saved them from being killed and having been trained to do this from an early age, they were quite happy in doing so. The RSPB do not think the thousands of birds’ deaths the ‘worthy’ professor blamed on cats is of issue.

FILM: The Piddinghoe Film Night starts again today, Friday, with a comedy Florence Foster Jenkins starring Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant. A very rich woman aspires to be an Opera star without the requisite voice to match. Village Hall 7pm for 7.30pm start. £3 entrance.
