BIG COMPANIES: I think it is time that all we small people (nothing to do with stature) formed an alliance against all medium to large companies. I refer to those who try to fob one off when they are responsible for something done to you that is detrimental to you but which they deny as having anything to do with them. It is obviously thought that their magnitude will scare you off, a David and Goliath situation. There is always hope though, look what happened to Goliath.

GRAMMAR SCHOOLS: I was fortunate, at eleven, to win a scholarship to my local Grammar School. What a load of political rubbish is being spoken of them by those who are against them. The recent statements that only the wealthy went to them is ludicrous. My grammar school had students from every background imaginable. There were no wealthy children in the school. Half of them were on free school meals. Those parents with means sent them to the nearest private school. My school was in a seaside town where most people were only in employment for six months of the year, i.e. in the tourist season. The rest of the year was pretty bleak. The children got there because of scholastic aptitude and aspirations, not due to the advantage of wealth. A provision was also made for late developers, who showed aptitude, to be transferred at thirteen from their secondary modern to the grammar school. One got there because of what was between the ears and not because of the depth of the pocket.

THE JOY OF SILENCE: When I go out with friends for a meal, I want to be able to talk quietly and be able to hear what they say. Those hard of hearing find this particularly detrimental to their enjoyment and I have many times had to request that the particular establishment decrease the decibels so that everyone can hear what is being said. Why is it necessary for there to be incessant background so-called music, so loud that it takes over? Why does it have to be there at all? Like many other trends, it came across from North America. It seemed to start way back with Musak played in lifts, then it spread to shops and finally to eateries and pubs. It is a form of purgatory to which no-one should be sentenced. Let’s have a campaign for silence or at least for the removal of this addiction to noise. Let those of like minds make this protest so that we may replace the unwanted spectre at the feast with glorious quiet.

SMILE FOR THE DAY: What do teenagers and Neanderthals have in common? They both enjoy clubbing. Why was the invention of the wheel so dangerous? It caused a revolution.
