VILLAGE UNDER ATTACK: Saturday, June 25, the village was startled by large bangs around 11pm. Were we under attack? It was discovered later that it was fireworks not terrorists. Perhaps an earlier display would have been less disturbing.

WOMEN AND THE SOMME: When I was very small, I met a lot of very old ladies who were introduced as Miss Brown, Miss Green etc. The significance of the ‘Miss’ was not obvious to me until I was much older and realised not only the devastating effect of all those male deaths on their families in World War One, but also the effect it had in reducing the number of eligible males for thousands of women. There were not enough men left for them to be able to marry. This aspect is never mentioned, but I feel that it should be. Rather than often being derisory of those unmarried women, their sacrifice should also be recognised.

VILLAGE BARBECUE: Sunday June 26, villagers were grateful for the good weather which enabled the Big Barbecue to go ahead as planned on the Hoe rather than in the confines of the village hall. It was enjoyed by those attending and particular thanks must be given to Sheila and Mel for their efforts.
