WEATHER: Hurray, a day without rain at last. But what a shock to the system after such mild weather. My pigs were not eager to get out of bed.

THEFT: I think stealing is one of the worst crimes, yet it seems to be regarded as just a minor matter. When we moved into our house, we put a number of packages into an outbuilding to be sorted the next day as we were too tired to do any more that day. A public footpath goes past our house and someone had obviously observed what we had done. The next morning, we found stuff chucked everywhere and much was broken. The most hurtful of all was the theft of an Edwardian Steiff Teddy Bear which had been my mothers and a dolls house that my grandfather had built for her, which I had inherited. The thieves obviously knew the value of the items stolen but it was the sentimental value loss that upset me the most.

SMILE FOR THE DAY: A tourist is walking around a Large Country House. He asks the guide ‘Why is that animal standing on the mantelpiece surrounded by all those guns?’‘Oh,’ said the guide ‘That’s his Lordship’s Goat of arms.’
