Pie competition

CRUSTY types were particularly welcome in a Bexhill pub on Sunday, August 28 when The Sportsman in Sackville Road staged its second annual pie competition.

Entries reflected both sweet and savoury recipes, and first time competitors Becky Eardley and Pam Robotham, of Woodville Road, were judged the winners with an apple and cinnamon pie created from fruit freshly garnered from the garden.

Becky said: “As per the rules, the pastry was home-made, too, but it was touch-and-go meeting the deadline for entries. Our pie was still in the oven barely minutes before we were due at the Sportsman.”

A blackberry and apple pie baked by Adam Craggs was runner up, while Tom Craggs came third with a pork pie. The event raised £75 which was donated to help a local teenage cancer patient buy herself a purple wig.
