Pier was a big inspiration for gallery exhibition

Three illustration students from Sussex Coast College Hastings had extra reason to celebrate over Christmas.

The students produced a selection of ‘Eastbourne inspired’ prints that were part of an Emma Mason gallery exhibition during December.

Emma Mason invited the students into the gallery last summer, where she briefed and challenged them to produce personal prints that would be sold in the gallery during the Christmas exhibition. When Emma met with the students she described the art of print making and outlined criteria for the brief that the students had to follow.

Tatiana Butt produced an illustration of Eastbourne Pier which she printed onto a wooden ruler.

Tatiana said, “The inspiration for my vintage ruler print came from a previous project about my home town (Eastbourne). Eastbourne may be considered restful, but there lies its beauty.”

“I had drawn the pier many times before, and while studying at Sussex Coast College I developed a taste for printmaking, particularly screen-printing and etching.

“Combining the two (the pier and printing) seemed like the perfect thing to do; although it wasn’t an easy task to print the image onto a narrow wooden ruler.

“I wanted to create an attractive yet practical item that could be decorative. It would be the perfect souvenir or even hold sentimental value to people of the town. I thought it would be a nice touch to include a fun fact on the other side. I had worked out that the pier is 1,000ft long and my rulers are 1ft long, so 1000 rulers are equal to the pier.”

Ashley Billett and Henry Farmer also produced screen-prints for the gallery and continue to study at the college. They are currently in their second year, and like many other students studying Higher Education courses at the college, travel from Eastbourne each day.
