Pilot dies in plane crash near Heathfield

The pilot of a light aircraft that crashed into a field near Heathfield on Tuesday morning (August 4), sadly died at the scene.

Emergency services were called to the crash scene off Herrings Lane, Cross-in-Hand, at 11am where the aircraft had caught fire after crashing.

Firefighters from Heathfield, Uckfield, Battle & Wadhurst attended, along with police and the ambulance service.

Upon arrival, crews found one small aircraft had crashed into a field.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: “Unfortunately, the pilot is believed to have died instantly. His next-of-kin have been advised.

“The matter has now been passed to the Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB) for investigation.”

East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service said: “Crews used foam to extinguish the fire.

“Crews left the scene at 11.25am.

“South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) and Sussex Police are currently on scene.”

A spokesman for SECAmb confirmed crews were at the scene of the crash.

“We were called at 11am and sent a number of resources to the scene,” said the spokesman.
