Pilot who died in plane crash near Heathfield is named

The pilot of a light aircraft who died after crashing into a field near Heathfield has been named by police.

Emergency services were called to the fatal crash off Herrings Lane, Cross-in-Hand, at 11am on Tuesday (August 4), where the aircraft had caught fire after crashing.

Firefighters from Heathfield, Uckfield, Battle & Wadhurst scrambled to the scene, along with police and the ambulance service.

Upon arrival, crews found one small aircraft had crashed into a field. The pilot was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Sussex Police confirmed today that the pilot has been named as 65-year-old Richard Warriner from Burwash.

A spokesman added: “His body was recovered from the wreckage of his plane after it came down in open ground off Herrings Lane just after 11am.

“The crash is being investigated by the Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB).”
