Pink clothes are a fundraising hit

STAFF at a Middleton store looked pretty in pink as they set another fundraising record.

The employees at Barleys donned the colour for their fourth year in support of the Breast Cancer Campaign charity.

Their eye-catching efforts raised a best-ever £980 to easily outstrip last year’s previous highest total of £750 of donations.

Manager Barry Lambert said: “This was a magnificent effort by both our enterprising staff team and our very generous, good-humoured customers.”

The traditional hardware and DIY outlet on Middleton Road became involved after a member of staff overcame breast cancer and the wife of one of the owners lost her life to the condition.

Jonathan Barley, one of the shop’s owners, said: “Most of our customers love seeing our staff dress in pink.

“Some of them are a bit shocked, especially when they see one of our drivers turn up like that at their front doors delivering Calor Gas.

“Our shop is at the heart of the village and is slap bang in the middle. We are a really significant part of the area and taking part in an effort like this is about being part of the community.”

The business was surviving well against competition from out of town shops and internet shopping.

“We have been doing quite well,” said Mr Barley. “People appreciate the personal service we give them.”
