Plan to change hotel in to flats faces battle

A WORTHING-based company, which received widespread acclaim for its construction of a striking art-deco style housing complex on the site of the former Warnes Hotel, is facing a battle in its bid to create a similar development on the site of the town's Eardley Hotel.

Roffey Homes now wants to demolish that hotel, overlooking Splash Point, and build 34 flats there in a six-storey replica building with associated underground parking.

Planning officers have recommended refusal to the scheme, which will be discussed by the borough development control committee on Thursday. There have been 20 objections to the plan but 32 letters in favour.

Officers say they are not satisfied the loss of the old hotel could be justified since it is a listed building in a conservation area.

They fear the replacement building was too big and bulky and would detract from the character and appearance of the seafront, though they have some sympathy with a residential scheme on the site.
