Planned family centre 'would play vital role'

A £500,000 children and family centre has been proposed for Rose Green.

The centre would have a multi-purpose room for activities and services such as a toy library, parent and toddler groups, and baby clinics.

There would also be a small meeting room and an informal area with public internet access. It would be built on the site of Rose Green Junior School in Raleigh Road.

A range of services, primarily for under-five year olds and their families, would be planned with local parents and partner organisations.

Services for older children and children with additional needs will be discussed with the community.

Pat Arculus, West Sussex County Council's cabinet member for children and young people's services, said: "The council is working in partnership with Rose Green Junior School on this important resource for all parents and young children in the area.

"The centre will play a vital role for the whole community and will improve services for local families.

"If the proposal is accepted, work will begin in October and be completed the following March."

The centre is part of the government's programme to have a SureStart Children's Centre in every community by 2010.

The council is seeking planning permission for the building.

Orange planning site notices are posted close to the school entrance to invite residents to comment on the proposed development within a 21-day period.

The plans can be viewed at the school.
