Plans for new eco quarter go on public show

Church Commissioners are putting their latest plans for a massive development in North Bersted on show.

The exhibition will take place at two venues tomorrow (Friday, April 3) and Saturday, April 4.

It will be open between 5.30pm and 8pm tomorrow at the Jubilee Community Centre in Chalcraft Lane. Saturday sees it continue from 11am until 4pm at the Regis Centre in Belmont Street, Bognor Regis.

A representative of the Church Commissioners, who own most of the land, will be present as well as consultants who are working on the plans.

Steve Melligan, of the Church Commissioners, said the exhibitions would provide the chance to put on show the changes suggested from the original plans.

"Our two stakeholder forums were very well attended and very constructive.

"We had parish, town, district and county councillors in attendance as well as other interested parties giving their views on how the proposed development should look and what facilities should be included.

"We have tried to incorporate as many of these ideas as possible. We are now at a stage where we are looking for feedback from local residents," he stated.

The proposals for what is being called the Bognor Regis eco quarter concern 2,500 homes on farmland north of Chalcraft Lane.

Business uses to provide a job for every household and community facilities are planned as well.

The intended scheme has aroused a lot of anger among North Bersted and West Meads residents.

It is being produced in parallel with Arun District Council's consultation about earmarking sites for future development.

But it is separate from the work of the council, which is only today finishing its consultation about the locations to be chosen.

More than 14,000 invitations have been sent out for the latest exhibitions. Those who go along will be invited to comment on the current proposals.

Their responses will be used to devise a masterplan for the site.

The Church Commissioners have pledged to carry on consulting about the plans for the area to ensure residents continue to have the chance to have their say.

This also includes stakeholder forums for councillors.
