Plans for Pavilion party gather pace with call for memories

PENSIONERS with memories of an important day in Bexhill's past are being asked to step forward.

As part of their 75th anniversary celebrations, the De La Warr Pavilion is re-creating a classic photograph taken in 1936 (right), showing a famous dance troupe entertaining an audience of hundreds.

Now, as the build-up to the big day on Bank Holiday Monday, August 30, gathers pace, any Bexhill stalwarts who may remember being among crowds jostling for space as the Daily Mirror Eight dance girls performed on the terrace are asked to contact the Bexhill Observer with stories of the day.

So if you remember joining the crowds in the same year King George V was suceeded by Edward VIII and the crystal palace burned down, call the Observer on 01424 730555 or email [email protected] to add your thoughts to our story archive.

"I think we are going to get a lot of support for this," said Pavilion spokesperson Sally Ann Lycett. "It's going to be a fantastic day.

"We did quite a big campaign on Bexhill Carnival day, so we know the plan is out there and people will come."

A parkour team replaces the dance troupe on the day, and crowds will be asked to form a scratch orchestra conducted by local music man Mike Hatchard.

The scene will be captured by top London photographer Sheila Burnette, and postcards of the final shot will be given to all those who join in.
