Plans underway for Poppy Appeal field of Remembrance

A Poppy Appeal initiative inspired by the Field of Remembrance at Westminster Abbey has been launched in Polegate.

Former Royal Artilery soldier Joe O’Riordan is calling for people to place small wooden crosses at the memorial for the town’s fallen heroes.

The president of the Royal British Legion Polegate Branch hopes the initiative will become an annual sight at the War Memorial in the Recreation Ground on Wannock Road.

The 71-year-old said: “The idea is to encourage the people who buy the small wooden cross every year to take them and put them in the ground around the war memorial.

“It’s the first year but it’s something we want to be ongoing. We’ll start it this year and I hope it will develop in Polegate.I took the inspiration from Westminster I suppose; it may sound a bit grand but that’s where the idea came from as I’ve been up to see it and it was very impressive, and so if we can do that in a small way I think it will be a wonderful gesture.”

Anyone interested in placing a cross in the grass close to the memorial can do so at any time or day. To obtain a cross call 01323 486021.
