Planting for the future in Arundel

FROM small apples big green ideas grow, or so goes the thinking at Arundel Church of England School.

Teachers and pupils planted a crab apple tree at the Jarvis Road school, to celebrate World Environment Day, and to mark the retirement head teacher, Linda Davies.

"It was part of our eco week, where the students got involved in all kinds of activities looking at the environment, and as I am retiring, I gave the tree as a present," said Linda.

"The planet is getting smaller and needs protecting. We don't want to frighten the children, but to help them understand that they can make a difference, and teach the older generation what needs to be done."

The week-long project, which was organised by parent Adam Swain and reception class teacher Jacquie Thatcher, looked at how the students could improve their school grounds, and they came up with ideas such as a nature trail.

Linda, who will retire at the end of the term after 40 years in teaching and more than a decade at Arundel C of E, went on to thank Jacquie for "all her hard work" in putting the event together.
