Edible Eastbourne will be planting fruit trees, blackcurrants, gooseberries, raspberries, herbs and pollinator plants in sustainable compost beds called guilds. These will accompany the group’s raised bed herb planters in three local parks.

The project will involve the planting of a variety peculiar to the town - the Eastbourne Pippin apple tree.

The aim is for local communities to adopt the fruit and share produce. In future fruit could be planted all over town to provide healthy food.

All are welcome to come along, help and learn more about growing from 11am to 3pm on a series of Saturdays. Just turn up in warm clothes and join in the fun! This exciting project is supported by Eastbourne Borough Council.

The planting dates are: Gildridge Park, February 13; Archery Park, February 20 and 27; and Shinewater Park, March 12 (plus more dates).

Contact Edible Eastbourne at [email protected] or on Facebook. Volunteers are also needed to assist with organisation.

The Eastbourne Pippin variety originated in the town in 1930. It was popularised by E. A. Linley. More information is needed about the variety . Please contact Edible Eastbourne if you know of a tree or can help the group find out more concerning its history.

The trees for planting have been obtained from Brighton Permaculture Trust which has a collection of the 32 known Sussex varieties.
