Tesco has teamed up with Groundwork to launch its Bags of Help initiative across England and Wales.

The scheme will see three local community groups awarded grants of £12,000, £10,000 and £8,000 – all raised from the 5p bag charge.

Highwoods Preservation Society volunteers have worked since 1980 to care for Bexhill’s 87-acre beauty-spot and Site of Special Scientific Interest under a management agreement with Rother Council. The charity won an award in 1986 for its first access-for-all-path. This opened up a section of the Peartree Lane woodland near its largest pond.

Its second access-for-all path opened in 2013, earning the gratitude of many more nature-lovers.

Now the charity plans an extension to the original stone-surfaced path to give access to another section of woodland. This scheme will cost around £13,000.

Grant level depends on votes cast by Tesco shoppers at their stores at Ravenside, Battle Express and Little Common.
