PLASTIC BAGS COVER UNSAFE GRAVESTONES

PINK plastic bags and yellow tape have been used to cover gravestones deemed 'unsafe' in Uckfield.

Visitors to the Uckfield Town Council-run Snatts Road cemetery were shocked to discover some of the graves had been secured with lurid coloured plastic bags and 'crime scene' style plastic tape announcing 'Danger Unsafe Keep Away'

Around 30 graves have been covered after safety tests were carried out in autumn 2006.

A council spokesman said: 'Workman should be carrying out repairs later in the year.

'Our main priority when securing the graves was to ensure visitors safety but of course it is very regrettable if this has caused any distress.'

The council has contacted all known relatives of the graves affected to notify them the headstones are unsafe.

A large number of the crumbling graves date back to the 19th century and the council has been unable to find a contact.

More information on which graves have been affected by the changes from the town council 01825 762774.
