Platinum anniversary couple celebrate Valentine's Day

ROMANCE is certainly not dead, as one supermarket found out in the run up to Valentine's Day.

Sainsbury's in Newhaven launched a competition to find the longest married couple in the town.

Manager Tim Maginnis said they had a fantastic response.

The winning couple were Bob and Bertha Webb who have stuck together for an incredible 70 years. They will celebrate their platinum anniversary this month.

The couple, who are both 96 and from Newhaven, received a bottle of champagne and a bunch of roses to help them celebrate Valentine's Day.

In second place, pipped to the post by just one year, were Gerry and Doris Ranger who married in July 1939, clocking up an impressive 69 years.

They also received champagne and roses.

Boxes of chocolate will be given to 48 other couples who have been married more than 60 years.

Mr Maginnis said: 'We were delighted with the huge response we had to this competition and pleased to have been able to help all these couples celebrate Valentines's Day after all those years '“ more than 3,000 in total.'

Mr and Mrs Webb's daughter Annette said: 'Bob and Bertha have not been too well at the moment so this has really cheered them up and brought smiles to their faces.'

Gerry and Doris Ranger were due to receive their roses and champagne at a small tea party at the store yesterday.
