A Lewes church is appealing for help with its ancient Summer Fair which is an important fundraising event for the historic building.
St Thomas a Becket, in Cliffe High Street, stages its annual event on Saturday, August 24, from 10am to 12.30pm, and needs donations of home-made cakes, preserves (pickles, jams and marmalades), produce and gifts including soft toys.
All donations should be taken to Cliffe Hall (next to the church) before 10am on the day of the fair.
The event is steeped in history, dating back to a 1410 charter granted by Henry IV.
“This is a key event for St Thomas,” said the church’s webmaster, Trevor Butler.
“All money raised goes towards the upkeep of the historic building which is at the centre of the Cliffe community – being an old building, there is always maintenance required such as the recent major stonework replacement project.”
Specialist cpontractors were called in to replace some of the crumbling stonework in the interior of the church, one of the oldest in Lewes.
