Playden

The misty mornings look wonderful across Romney Marsh. Very often there is just a strip of mist at ground level, showing tree tops and turbine blades floating above.

You may remember that a couple of years ago I burbled on about a new baby apple tree called Saltcote Pippin which I had grafted at Brogdale. The little maiden tree has its first apples this year. Five pairs of fruit set, each self-thinned to one apple, and I now have five lovely fruits plumping up nicely.

Mrs. Heather Coote has sent this report of the WQ.I. Meeting.

Our President welcomed everyone to the meeting. She also gave the sad news that Gladwys Cawdron had died, and that her funeral was to be on 11th September. We observed a minute’s silence in her memory.

One of many dates for our diaries was the Autumn Group Meeting in Playden W. I. Hall on Friday 18th October at 2.30 pm. Playden will be the hosts, and the speaker will be Gilly Halcrow talking about “Special Operations Executive - Churchill’s Secret Army.”

The holiday to the historic places featured in Downton Abbey, Larkrise to Candleford and Cranford was thoroughly enjoyed by all those who went. They also enjoyed the September heatwave.

Margaret had several more excursions up her sleeve, and already she is thinking about a Christmas outing to a Garden Centre in November.

Our speaker was due to talk about cruising, but unfortunately was taken ill on her last cruise and ended up in hospital. Marian Maylam nobly stepped into the breach, and gave us a talk on her trip to Australia several years ago, when she went to visit her son and family.

Next month we will need nominations for the 2014 Committee and volunteers are needed to stand.

Thank you Heather.

The Rye Arts Festival Concert in Playden Church on Friday 27th September at 3 pm is called “The Bird Fancyer’s Delight.” Leading flautist Stephen Preston will give a fascinating and delightful brief history of bird song in music from the standpoint of a flute player. Stephen is a renowned player of 18th and 19th century flutes and was a founding principle flautist of The Academy of Ancient Music, London Baroque as well as many other historic ensembles.
