Playden

Marion Lovell, Abingworth, New England Lane

Today, Friday 21st June, is the Mid-summer solstice. In other words, the longest day of the year and shortest night. From now on until Christmas, the days will be getting shorter. Unfortunately the weather doesn’t feel much like midsummer.

I was amused to read in the RVA bulletin advice on the precautions to take during a heat-wave. “Chance would be a fine thing,” as they say.

But the Friends of Playden Church live hopefully that it will be fine and warm on Saturday and Sunday, 22nd and 23rd June, for you all to visit the Open Gardens. They will be open each day from 1 to 5 pm. Each garden will have a few tickets, so you may begin where best suits you, but the main ticket point is just by the church gate, where there is parking room. There will be plants, produce and preserves for sale too, just handy to pop into your car.

Tickets, which cost £5, are a map of the location of all Open Gardens.

There is some disabled parking at Cherries, and road parking in Fairmeadow. Otherwise we hope that you will walk along the lanes of Playden and enjoy some spectacular views across Romney Marsh.

In previous publicity I have neglected to say that Pimms will be available at Maytham Cottage, as you come along Rectory Lane. Teas will be served in Point Hill.

I was in one of the gardens in Rectory Lane last week when an unusual noise overhead caused us all to look up. There, being mobbed by seagulls, was a pair of buzzards. I know which birds I prefer! But is that prejudice because of the rarity factor?

Although an attempt was made to correct an error, it still went ahead. So my apologies to Playden W.I. for wrongly attributing the Coffee Morning in the Butter Market to Playden Church. Over £200 was raised for funds.

Rye Country Market is at Rye Community Centre, Conduit Hill every Friday 10 till 11.30. The market sells local produce with a good selection of cakes, savouries, plants, cut flowers, jam, marmalade and chutney. There are also free range eggs. And usually there are craft items.

On Friday 28th June there will be a special offer of coffee or tea and a piece of cake for £1.50. there will be a raffle too.

Entrance is free. Do come along and browse and meet your friends for a coffee.

The RVA Bulletin advises us that you can now contact them in their new venue in the heart of Rye in the St. Mary’s Centre, each Monday, Thursday and Friday between 9.30 am and 1 pm. To meet someone at other times, contact Mrs. Sam Stone on [email protected] or phone her on 07722 298 692.

The Giant Walking Bus was a great success for the children of Playden School last week. Some children have written to local politicians asking them to support the idea of reducing the speed of traffic along Houghton Green Lane. Two of them will come to meet with the children. This may also be carried through to the Parish Council, as suggested last week.

Cycling proficiency training will be offered to children in year 6, and if space allows, to year 5. This will complement the Safety in Action session which the year 6 children were involved in last week.

The Mobile Library will be at Poppyfield on Monday from 11.30 to 11.50.

The mid-week services continue on Tuesday at 9.30 am for Morning Prayer and 3.30 pm for Evening Prayer in Church.

The 11 am service will definitely be Parish Communion. Not sure who will be leading it, as I got it wrong last week.

P.S. The Vicar has just confirmed that she will be there.
