Playden

Marion Lovell, Abingworth, New England Lane

I do hope that St. David is a bit warmer in Wales than we are here on the east coast, plagued by that wind from Siberia.

One of the things which I find quite magical in this busy, noisy world, is a large group of people sitting in total, rapt silence, concentrating on what is happening. This was the scenario in the Playden W. I. Hall last Saturday when Philippa Urquhart was telling us Ghost Stories. No one seemed to move at all.

The first story was followed by a most delicious supper of home-made soup, cheeses, pickles, tomatoes, celery and grapes beautifully presented on platters. All this was prepared by head chef Viv with help from sous chef Heather, and assistance from other members of both families. Then there was another story set in Brenzet. It was a most enjoyable evening and a very different kind of event for the Friends of Playden Church.

Their next event will be the Car Treasure Hunt arranged for 7th April. Details later, but you might wish to book the date now.

The Mobile Library will be at Poppyfield on Monday from 11.30 to 11.50 am.

The Playden Floral Group will welcome Mrs.Brenda Wilson to their meeting on Monday afternoon. She comes from the Shirley Leaf and Petal Company Ltd. and will be speaking about artificial flowers, leaves, twigs and foliage used for the theatre, TV, films, costumes and millinery decoration. Everything is flame proof. There is a museum in the Old Town in Hastings showing some of the materials used - silk, velvet, leather, and in the early days, wax. The company has been in existence since 1910.

The meeting begins at 2.15 pm in the Playden W. I. Hall.
